Now that tank is installed, we can take stock on the impact around it. Sure I did plans on paper, but there's nothing like seeing it in situ. With first heavy rains, it immediately became apparent that water flows and pools behind the tank, so paths/channels have been roughed out above to redirect water from orchard into the veg area, and thoughts turned to environment immediate round the tank itself.
This big tank will help shade the east side of shed from early summer sun (a good thing) while still allowing window to admit fresh air and light. Hopefully the tank will have potential as a heat bank and barrier to create some sheltered and less extreme areas around which can be explored for more fussier plants.
The avocado has been planted out just inside the veg barrier where it will hopefully get a protected start, but close to the tank to ideally take advantage of its moderating influence as the tree grows.
The tank can have earth built up about 1/3 of the way, provided access to outlets is still available. So plans afoot for passionfruit vine trained against it (will also hopefully slow/collect/use water coming down from roof of tank (who knew they didn't design tanks to routinely trap this and use it?) and perhaps other beds around north-facing base.
And now there's no barrier to getting the greenhouse build on side of shed.
