Watching the seasons change slowly and feeling them change, unpredictably. And suddenly one morning, one severe night, and the garden of summer and autumn is cut down. A swift end to spent veggies. Unfortunately, missed chance to harvest and use the green tomatoes.
Elsewhere in the veg garden last of the wonderful little tomatoes and the finally flourishing zucchini.
Elsewhere, fruit trees around the veg bed show varying habits - the quince [below left] is happily growing, the persimmon has dropped its leaves but (fingers crossed) is just going into expected winter abeyance, and the avocado [below right], though there's been some frost damage, seems to be soldiering on - at least well enough to warrant investigating steps to help protect it further.
Figs not so tolerant! I don't remember it looking this dreadful last year, but they certainly lost all leaves over winter but sprung into growth once spring warming arrived. Hopefully this is the pattern again.
Of the plants around the house, positive signs with the lemons, both still bearing and looking quite lively.
Succulents showing varying responses. Behind house under cloth shelter they show no signs of damage from this frost. Likewise the ones nestled on the front steps, protected from the south and east. But the more exposed ones in the new bed beside the path at west of house are not looking so good.
