neglect, forgetfulness and pleasant surprise
Despite best efforts to record and document garden developments this year, I’m rather glad some things have escaped me. Let's call them uncontrolled experiments and pleasant surprises ... Daffodils have appeared between feijoas in the first orchard bed, and broad beans in one of the beds further back.
Had completely forgotten planting those daffodils. Won’t be much good once (if?) the feijoas thicken up to the planned hedge, but a nice surprise for now, with flowers to anticipate. And bulbs can always be lifted and replanted elsewhere later.
The broad beans have emerged in one of the unwatered beds beyond that, competing with thriving capeweed. They can't be irrigated with the black water, so I'll see how they go with just rainfall, and maybe step in with some handwatering if needed.
I've vague recollections now of planting out some seeds for their nitrogen-fixing capacity and to work in as green manure – but in the meantime had dug over these beds and planted bare-rooted fruit trees. Had forgotten where the beans were, and would have assumed they’d been too disturbed to grow. Will now be watching them fight it out with the capeweed to see if they become productive without watering.
